New specification for Gas Oil. Gas Oil customers please read.
02.11.10 IMPORTANT MEMO FOR OUR GAS OIL CUSTOMERS – GAS OIL SPECIFICATION CHANGES. ACTION REQUIRED.
As you may be aware from 1 January 2011, non-road mobile machinery (i.e. ‘off road equipment’) which uses Gas Oil will be required to use a new ‘sulphur free’ Gas Oil specification. The definition of non-road moving machinery (NRMM) includes tractors and other agricultural equipment, construction equipment, portable generators and inland waterway vessels.
Many oil producers will achieve the reduction of sulphur content by using Road Diesel (which is already ‘sulphur free’) to make their Gas Oil and because Road Diesel currently has up to 7% biodiesel within it, the ‘sulphur free’ Gas Oil that we supply may also contain up to 7% biodiesel. Biodiesel presents several significant issues for storage and usage which you need to be aware of as these can result in leaks, blockages, damage to equipment and/or bacterial contamination if appropriate action is not taken. These issues are best explained by the Department for Transport’s own publication ‘Fuel Quality Directive Gas Oil Requirements’ which can be viewed and downloaded at http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roads/environment/fuel-quality-directive. If you do not have internet access, please contact us and we will gladly fax or post you a copy of this document.
IMPORTANT NOTE:We have recently been informed that with immediate effect the Gas Oil supplied to us, which we then supply to you, will be the ‘sulphur free’ type. This means that it is essential you read the guidance on ‘sulphur free’ Gas Oil and biodiesel and take appropriate responsive steps. Any Gas Oil you receive from us on or after 3rd November 2010 will potentially be ‘sulphur free’ Gas Oil with a biodiesel content.
We are truly sorry for the short notice on this issue. There has been much confusion and uncertainty surrounding the specification change and we did not wish to contact our customers until we were certain of what was happening and what needed to be done. Unfortunately, that certainty has only come now that the introduction of the ‘sulphur free’ specification has been brought forward to November 2010.
We must also point out that from 1 January 2011, there will be a second specification of Gas Oil which will still contain the higher sulphur content and which will not contain biodiesel. This product will also possibly be cheaper than the ‘sulphur free’ Gas Oil. However, this specification will be exclusively supplied for purposes other than non-road moving machinery, such as heating or stationary equipment and will need to be stored separately from the ‘sulphur free’ product. Although we anticipate that the majority of demand will be for the ‘sulphur free’ product it is most likely that we will be able to supply both specifications so if you feel that you would be interested in receiving the higher sulphur specification please contact us and we will discuss the available options for supply.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries with the above.
